Limewire works for me but theres other P2P programs like Morpheus and Grokster or my favorite Kazaa.

Or you could try Torrents or Pirate websites but those are filled with viruses and some of the links don't work.

If you have Linux/Unix you probley have to use Torrents or Pirate websites. But if you have Windows/Mac I would recommend the P2P programs.

P.S. Don't waste your money on Limewire Pro if you think it will fix the problem of viruses, it won't.

Limewire is the only free one that I have found that isn't full of viruses. You would be pleased with it. A majority of the ones listed in the other answers cost. Try Limewire, but do not upgrade to Limewire Pro--it costs. But just Limewire is free.
If you're downloading for free, using p2p software, you're downloading from people like you - no guarantee that the file isn't deliberately a virus or worse.
Downloading music for free is also illegal and i am not encouraging it, however it's your own choice whether to steal or not, You can use bit torrent search engines, find the specific album you want, you can even download the track by track using bit torrent client's file selection method. rarely that you encounter viruses, somehow if you have only used lime wire to download music, i don't think you will get viruses as long as you download files with .mp3 extensions
For Windoze, use Frostwire or one of the Torrent clients. For Linux/Unix use gtk-gnutella or the torrent clients. It's probably illegal to download copyrighted music and software, image files or just about anything in the US now. Do so at your own risk!!!
programs like bitlord or bitcomet can be really good, but you have to be really cautious about wat you download
Use torrents such as Azureus, BitComet, Bittorando, etc
You should give Jamendo a try. All of the artists on there chose to release their music under a Creative Commons license instead of the traditional copyright license, allowing for free distribution and sharing. It is 100% free and 100% legal.
