spyware spies on you. records the websites you visit. what you looked at on a site. could record passwords.
adware sends you advertisements. pop up ads, etc.
malware is when you think it is software to do something,but it is MALicious. it is designed to look like something else. free software with something hidden in it.
and a virus is called a virus because it acts like a human virus. spreads on contact and replicates.
they need different names because they act differently, and must be defended against differently.
i use a virus scan(AVG), adware scan (AD- Aware)spyscan (spybot) and a software firewall(zonealarm). none catches all of them.

Very seldom do Mac's get viruses and/or spyware. The reason is that 90% of the world's computers use Windows, so practically 100% of the junk is written for windows.

Not necessarily. Windows operating system PC's receive more viruses/spyware as the OS is more common. Mac and Linux boxes are not as common, therefore not too many people create viruses or spyware based on them.
If a company wants to get the most bang for the buck they will write spyware/virus for the Windows OS/Internet Explorer. It has a wider user base for home and business PC's than Apple. Exploits and hacks are listed more often as well for the Windows OS, meaning more code is flowing freely.

Pop-ups are created by Adware installed by different sites on your computer. To stop these pop-ups, you need to remove special keys from your computer which are installed by those sites.

you dont have any protection programs? or they are all expired? You might have to purchase a good one (like Norton, Kaspersky or Mcafee...) online, but if you dont wanna do that, you can format your computer again by yourself, just put everything you need in drive D, and delete drive C totally, but the thing is you have to have a CD with a key to format windows again. If you dont have a key, you can find one online for Windows XP, Windows Vista and try to crack, but for me, it's kinda complicated and sometimes the keys found are in blacklist, kinda unsafe. does your computer still have guarantee? if so call the customer service and ask a technician what to do step by step to format your computer or if you cant do it yourself, send it back to the factory, they will format it all over again for you. Your computer will be like new without viruses, but remember to back up your data like documents, pictures, music (put them on CDs) before you send your computer. Good luck!
