Will a format kill all known viruses?

At first I was lead to believe that a format would kill a virus, then my mate formatted his PC twice and his virus was still there. I am now having a debate with someone who says that a format will kill any known virus.

What is the answer, will a format kill every virus known? If so would it have to be a high level format? For example would a quick format tend to leave a virus of some form or other, where an advanced format may kill them all?

Cheers for any help guys, I need to sort out this argument if I win or lose, I just need it over with, ;)

First of all it depends what drive you format and what type of virus you did not mention it

1) If you format a drive say c: which is usually that of OS installed and if you have virus in drive D: it will automatically spread to c: once you install windows.

Solution:

1) Download AVAST(Best Known Free AV S/W)

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-...

its home edition and free if you register also download update http://www.avast.com/eng/update_avast_4_...

and also run update after installation start BOOT TIME SCAN.

also after entering windows carry a full system scan.

If still you think you are affected with virus and think you want to clean completely

2)No other go just go for a complete system formating or repartition you will loose all data but sure you will not have any virus 100%.-Its final evil step.
