Out of curiosity which of these are illegal or not? Provide source if possible.
1. Writing a virus/Trojan and storing it on your own computer.
2. Writing a virus/Trojan and infecting your own computer with it
(assume computer is not connected to any network).
3. Writing a virus/Trojan and uploading it to the internet (but stating clearly
what it is).

So what would be the purpose of this misadventure? Once you reach step three, you are violating the law. But what purpose would steps 1 and 2 serve, if you did not intend harm on others?

If it's contained there is no case to answer, because any machine it spreads to will be considered authorised access.
If your code gets out into the wild, then "the prosecution" will hit you with the first three sections of the Computer Misuse Act and if they can prove you intended to misuse one or more computers then you'll get your wrists slapped.
It's also worth noting that accidental release is unlikely to win you any friends because you're aware of the potential for damage, so ignoring that might be considered willful neglect.
So, make sure your sandbox has no leaks.

I am no lawyer, but I believe, non of the above is illegal.
They have to prove by doing so, you had mal-intentions, or you caused an actual damage .
