Can viruses be killed?

If I get the flu or other type of illness... is it true that medicines or vaccines only control the virus or kill the simptoms? Or do they actually kill the virus?

Can viruses be killed?antivirus

Hi, only anti viral meds could help "kill" a viral infection, and unless you are severely immunocompromised, it would not be given under most circumstances.

Vaccines are pieces of a virus or a killed version of a specific virus that is introduced into your system in order to stimulate your body's natural defense systems to produce antibodies. Therefore if and when the specific virus attacks you, you already have antibodies made and your own immune system kills the virus before it can get a foothold in your body.

Mostly though, your body (as long as you are a normal, healthy person) can usually handle (kill) most viral infections that come your way. But there are some "big bads" that should not be messed with (polio, for example).

Here is a link on the immune system. I am using wiki in case english is not your first language:

Vaccines teach your body to recognize and kill the virus by practicing on dead ones. They don't help if you already have it (like the Humapn papilloma Virus vaccine)
