Viruses spread through email right?

If I only use Yahoo for email, do I lower my risk of getting a computer virus? If I do not use outlook or any other email software program, do I lower my chances of getting a virus?

This is only part true.

Yes, email is one means of spreading viruses. If an email user opens an attachment to an email, this email may contain a virus spreading to parts of your computer or sending it to everyone on your contacts list so that they can open it.

But, viruses are also spread by downloading files that you think are safe, but are actually hiding malicious code which can spread a virus around as well.

Don't worry about which email client you use, all of them are succeptible to viruses, even Yahoo. Just make sure that you have a good anti virus program on your system and that you do regular full system scans.

I have listed some good anti virus programs below.

yes yahoo must be updating its virus definations regularly,so it might find some of the newer viruses which a local antivirus scanner may not be able to
Viruses can spread in various ways. One way they can spread is as an attachment to email. Using Yahoo! email reduces your risk because you read your email on the web, you don't ordinarily download it to your PC and Yahoo! scans attachments for viruses and warns you if it finds any.
