Bearshare is legal, BUT downloading copyrighted music and other material is not. So, the program is legal, but what most people use it for is illegal.

Limewire is the same. Legal to own, but mostly used for illegal downloading. And you can get all sorts of viruses (and especially spyware) if you use either one. The problem is not as severe with Windows Vista as it is with earlier versions, and of course Mac users are even more protected from viruses. But no one is completely immune.

No file-sharing programme is illegal in itself. It is the use to which it is put which may be illegal.

As for viruses: As with any file-sharing programme, that is one of the risks.

Don't download ".exe" files. Don't download anything that seems to be the wrong filesize for the contents you expect.
